Even Denzel Washington Thinks Celebrities Are Overrated
Denzel Washington wants no part of being a celebrity.
During an interview with Page Six at the premiere of his film “Fences” in New York, the actor said he thinks most of Hollywood is “overrated.”
“My father worked 50 years for the water department, he was also a minister and he worked three jobs all the time,” Washington said. “He made it, he was successful. Celebrity is really overrated — we don’t want anything to do with celebrity.”
“I am an actor.”
Washington said it means a lot to him to turn the play “Fences” — which is about a sanitation worker who lives in Pittsburgh in the 1950s — into a film. (RELATED: Denzel Washington Blasts The Media)
“To take this play to the big screen means that it is an opportunity for millions of people to see it instead of thousands,” he said.
“[August] Wilson is a genius . . . it was a privilege, honor and a responsibility to bring his work to film.”
