Michael Phelps Just Revealed The Reason Behind His Sudden, Secret Wedding
American swimmer Michael Phelps and his wife Nicole Johnson got married in a hurry to make their travel plans easier for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
After another successful Olympic run for Phelps, the focus shifted from his swimming to his personal life when everyone learned he and his fiancé had been married for months. Johnson and the couple’s son Boomer attended the games in Rio this Summer, and all the while people believed she and the United States star swimmer were still just engaged.
In October, TMZ learned that Phelps and Johnson had been married for months, but the reason for their hushed-up wedding wasn’t known until now, E! News reports.
“Simple reason,” Michael told Sports Illustrated in a recent interview. “Boomer’s last name was Phelps and Nicole’s was Johnson, and that was going to make overseas travel more difficult. We were getting married anyway, so we just did it.”

Phelps shared a video of the October wedding ceremony on Instagram Monday.
“What an amazing video and a little teaser from our wedding!!!” Phelps said in the post.
The full interview will appear in this week’s issue of Sports Illustrated, which goes to news stands Thursday.
