Scarlett Johansson Is 2016’s Highest-Grossing Actor
Scarlett Johansson has had a huge year at the theaters bringing in a whopping $1.2 billion from ticketing booths worldwide.
Most of Johansson’s earnings come from her role as Black Widow in the hugely successful “Captain America: Civil War,” which grossed over $1.15 billion globally. Her role in “Hail, Caesar!” also contributed to her 2016 earnings, although it didn’t see near the same success as the Marvel comic-based movie, according to Forbes.
Nine of the top-ten grossing actors of the year appeared in comic-inspired movies. The only actor on the list who didn’t appear in a comic-inspired film was British actress Felicity Jones at No. 9 thanks to her role in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
The top-grossing list included Will Smith and Margot Robbie from “Suicide Squad,” Ryan Reynolds from “Deadpool,” Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Amy Adams from “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” as well as Johansson’s “Captain America” co-stars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans.
Evans and Downey Jr. shared the second spot on the list behind Johansson after grossing $1.15 billion each for the Marvel blockbuster.
With so many box office hits, including the latest Star Wars film still in theaters, analysts expect 2016 to be the biggest year in United States cinema history, Forbes reports. An estimated $11.05 billion has already been made in the North American box office and that number is expected to climb to $11.3 billion by the end of the year.
