Rory McIlroy Opens Up About His Breakup With Tennis Star Caroline Wozniacki
Professional golfer Rory McIlroy recently opened up about his breakup with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki while praising his current fiancée Erica Stoll.
In an interview with the Irish Independent published Tuesday, McIlroy never mentioned his former fiancée by name, but he gave his fans some serious insight into why it didn’t work out between the two of them.
The Irish golfer admitted he finds it “refreshing” now to be with someone who is living a normal life rather than, “‘Oh! My jet is 30 minutes late!'” clearly referring to Wozniacki.
“I thought at the time that being with someone that was in a similar position to you was the obvious answer. But it isn’t, because you can never get away from it,” Rory said, discussing his previous high-profile relationship with the tennis star. “You can never detach yourself and try to come back to the real world.”
“And that’s why I feel in such a good place now,” McIlroy began speaking about his new relationship with Stoll. “I don’t feel Erica wants to change me in any way. I can be myself around her; there’s no bullshit, no acting, no show,” the golfer added.
“I could speak to her about anything, we ended up spending a bit of time together and realised that there was something more there,” Rory said of the beginning of he and Stoll’s romance.
“I love that she knows everything about me, and there was no judgement there. There was no judgement from day one, which is huge, because that’s very hard to find for someone in my position.”
McIlroy announced his surprisingly-timed breakup in May of 2014 after he and Wozniacki’s wedding invitations were sent. At the time, he said he would not be saying anything further about their relationship.
It seems that his engagement with Stoll has finally allowed him to open up about the superstars’ breakup that shocked the sports world. And it can only help that he’s remained in the top tier of the world golf rankings since he and Wozniacki called it quits.
