“Today, the Oakland Raiders submitted an application to relocate their franchise to Las Vegas, as is provided for under the NFL Policy and Procedures for Proposed Franchise Relocations,” the league announced in a statement.

“The application will be reviewed in the coming weeks by league staff and the Stadium and Finance Committees. The relocation of a franchise requires the affirmative vote of three-quarters of the NFL clubs (24 of 32),” the NFL added in the statement.

The decision by the Raiders to leave Oakland has been in the works for a long time and was anticipated to happen before the February 24 deadline to file relocation papers.

Even if the Raiders receive 24 votes from NFL owners approving the move, the team will remain in Oakland until the 2020 season. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the vote will occur at the Annual Meeting in March.
