A Chicago man has been sentenced to nine months behind bars for hacking the email accounts of 30 celebrities and stealing information that included nude photos and videos.
On Tuesday, 29-year-old Edward Majerczyk was sentenced in federal court and ordered to pay $5,700 for counseling services for one undisclosed celebrity whose nude photos were shared online, according to the Hollywood Reporter. In October, Majerczyk plead guilty to his role in the hacking scandal that involved dozens of nude photos of celebrities being leaked online in 2014 through a phishing scheme that illegally gave him access to more than 300 email and other accounts online. The photos included Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, U.S. women’s soccer star Hope Solo and many others. (RELATED: Another Hacker Has Pled Guilty In The Nude Celebrity Photo Hack)
According to court documents, his attorney, Thomas Needham, said that his client was “suffering from depression and looked to pornography websites and internet chat rooms in an attempt to fill some of the voids and disappointment he was feeling in his life.” Needham added that the scandal “deeply affected” his client, who has reportedly sought help from a therapist for anxiety and panic attacks.
During an interview with federal agents, Lawrence reportedly became distraught about the hack of the nude photos.
In an interview with Vanity Fair magazine,
the actress called the violation of her privacy, a “sex crime.”
“It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime,” Lawrence said. “It is a sexual violation. It’s disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. That’s why these Web sites are responsible. Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated, and the first thought that crosses somebody’s mind is to make a profit from it. It’s so beyond me. I just can’t imagine being that detached from humanity. I can’t imagine being that thoughtless and careless and so empty inside.”
