NC State Head Basketball Coach Mark Gottfried Fired, But Not Out Yet
North Carolina State University head basketball coach Mark Gottfried has been fired, but will finish the season out as acting head coach of the team.
NC State athletic director Debbie Yow announced the news Thursday following a Wednesday night 97-73 loss to in-state rival in the University of North Carolina. That marked the Wolfpack’s third straight blowout loss which apparently reached the threshold for Yow to decide it was time to find a new coach for the program.
“Mark and I met today to discuss the future direction of our program,” Yow said in a statement. “While it has long been my practice to evaluate the body of work at season’s end, in reviewing the overall direction of our program, we believe a change in leadership is necessary moving forward. Our focus now remains on supporting our student-athletes and staff over the final weeks of our season.”
NC State has recorded 122 wins and 82 losses (47-55 in the ACC) in Gottfried’s six seasons at the helm. The Wolfpack made the NCAA tournament in four of those six and reached the Sweet 16 twice.
“It has been a privilege to serve as head coach of NC State, and I’m proud of what we have accomplished during my time here,” Gottfried said in a statement. “NC State is a special place and I appreciate the opportunity to finish the remainder of the season.”
The Wolfpack have a 14-13 record overall on the season and are 3-11 in ACC play. NC State and Yow plan to begin their search for a new coach immediately.
