George Clooney slammed President Donald Trump in an interview with a French outlet, calling him a “demagogue” and a “Hollywood elitist.”

On Tuesday, the 55-year-old actor spoke to the French network Canal+ and defended Meryl Streep and other celebrities who have spoken out against the president since the election, according to the Hill. (RELATED: What George Clooney Just Said About A Donald Trump Presidency Will Have Voters Fuming)

“When Meryl [Streep] spoke, everyone on that one side said, ‘Well that’s elitist Hollywood speaking,'” Clooney said. “She was an American citizen long before she was an icon.” (RELATED: George Clooney Says Troubled Nation ‘No Longer’ Afraid Of U.S.)

The actor called Trump a “Hollywood elitist” because he “collects $120,000 a year from his Screen Actors Guild pension fund,” before taking a shot at Trump’s chief strategist Steve Bannon.

“Steve Bannon is a failed film writer and director,” Clooney said. “That’s the truth, that’s what he’s done. He wrote a Shakespearean rap musical about the L.A. riots that he couldn’t get made.”

“He made a lot of money off of ‘Seinfeld,'” he added. “He’s elitist Hollywood, I mean that’s the reality.”

“We have a demagogue in the White House,” he continued. “We need the fourth estate, which is journalists, to hold his [Trump’s] feet to the fire.”

“They didn’t do a very good job during the campaign. And they haven’t done a particularly good job yet. But those things will change.”
