Beatty and Dunaway incorrectly announced that “La La Land” had won the award of the night, but only once the entire cast and crew got on stage to accept the award did a producer break in to announce that “Moonlight” did.

“This is not a joke,” ‘La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz said. “‘Moonlight’ has won best picture. ‘Moonlight,’ best picture.”

“I want to tell you what happened,” Beatty said moments later. “I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, ‘La La Land.’ That’s why I took such a long look at Faye [Dunaway] and at you. I wasn’t trying to be funny.”

Celebrities who were inside the Dolby Theatre weren’t even sure if what was happening was a stunt or not.

People instantly compared it to when Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner at Miss Universe.
