Detroit Red Wings legend Gordie Howe is arguably the greatest man to ever lace up skates, and today would have been his 89th birthday.

There’s no better way to honor the player coined “Mr. Hockey” than the short documentary “Gordie Howe: Life a Legend,” which chronicles the his incredible life.

Howe blazed a trailer that several fellow NHL hall-of-famers would eventually follow. Without Mr. Hockey there is likely no Red Wings dynasty, and perhaps the NHL never becomes the league it is today. (SLIDESHOW: 12 TIMES SPORTS PUNDIT KRISTINE LEAHY LOOKED ABSOLUTELY STUNNING)

He was a legend in every respect of the word, and the hockey world will not forgot his epic contributions to the sport.
