BBC Apologizes For Announcer’s ‘Inappropriate’ Comment About Sergio Garcia’s Fiancée

BBC golf announcer Peter Alliss was caught making a comment about how short the skirt of Sergio García’s fiancée Angela Akins was on live television during the Masters broadcast on Sunday.

After Garcia’s match-winning putt dropped in the hole on the 18th green, Akins was captured on the broadcast celebrating her future husband’s first major championship. As the camera focused on Akins Alliss could be heard saying “she’s got the shortest skirt on the campus.”

Many of the over 2.5 million viewers the veteran golf commentator’s muffled remark quickly sparking a sexism outcry, according to The Sun. The BBC has since apologized on behalf of their announcer. (VIDEO: Watch Sergio García And His Fiancée Celebrate When The Final Putt Dropped)

“Whilst believing he was off air Peter made a light hearted remark which he now knows was inappropriate,” a BBC rep said in a statement on Monday.

García defeated British golfer Justin Rose in a thrilling playoff win at Augusta National on Sunday. Apparently it didn’t take long for Alliss to lose focus after the Spaniard defeated his fellow countryman.
