Correspondents’ Dinner Comic Has Long History Of Mocking Trump
“Daily Show” correspondent Hasan Minhaj mocked President Donald Trump once again as he announced plans to host this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
“It is a tremendous honor to be a part of such a historic event even though the president has chosen not to attend this year. SAD,” Minhaj said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter. “Now more than ever, it is vital that we honor the First Amendment and the freedom of the press.” (RELATED: Celebrities Freak Out Over Trump’s Immigration Restriction)
In past sketches, the 31-year-old comedian has said that Muslims were in danger if Trump became president, and called him the “white ISIS.”
“One-third of a major political party in America is backing a racist maniac,” Minhaj said during a show December 2015. “This place is scary right now.”
“Donald Trump is an extremist leader who came out of nowhere,” he added. “He’s self-financed, recruits through social media, attracts his followers with a radical ideology to take over the world, and is actively trying to promote a war between Islam and the West. Donald Trump is white ISIS.”
The comedian also slammed the president over the first proposed immigration ban.
“Have I pretended to be Puerto Rican a few times since 9/11?” Minhaj said. “Claro que sí! But it used to be that when I walked on a plane, I could feel the stares and suspicion, and it sucked–but at least I knew the President of the United States had my back. Mostly because he’s also a Muslim. . . But now that asshole in seat 21-B calling the flight attendant, trying to get me thrown off the plane—now that guy is the president. Plus, I also think he’s groping the lady sitting next to him.”
Trump announced in February that he would not be attending the annual event. Later, White House staff said that they would not be attending in a show of “solidarity” with the president.
“I will not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner this year,” Trump tweeted. “Please wish everyone well and have a great evening!”
