Dick Vitale is famous for his college basketball commentary, but he just decided to weigh in on a certain future NFL player — and he came in hot.

Joe Mixon, the former Oklahoma University standout who brutally beat a female student while he was in school, was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the NFL draft. Given his history and the jarring video footage of him breaking a woman’s face, it’s no surprise that the Bengals selection was met with intense criticism.

“If he weren’t a superstar FB player he wouldn’t be playing he’d be wearing a different uniform with some stripes on it,” Vitale said, clearly suggesting that Mixon belongs in prison for his actions.

“He hit her with a full fist,” Vitale continued. “Criminal. Unbelievable. I have no sympathy for that case.”

Many of the other talking heads of sports have offered their take on Cincinnati’s decision to draft the talented running back despite his history. Most of the criticism has come from college football and NFL analysts, but clearly ESPN’s Dick Vitale didn’t hesitate to make his opinion known.

Mixon and the victim of his beating, Amelia Molitor, released a joint statement last week announcing that they reached a settlement regarding the 2014 incident.

“I’m thankful Mia and I were able to talk privately,” Mixon said in the statement. “I was able to apologize to her one-to-one. The way I reacted that night, that’s not me. That’s not the way I was raised. I think she understands that. Talking together helps move us past what happened.”

“I know I have to keep working to be a better person, and this is another step in that direction,” Mixon added.

Molitor said that she was happy to bring the lawsuit to an end and noted that she appreciated Mixon’s apology, claiming “the feelings he expressed were sincere.”

“I’m finished talking about what happened that night with Joe. It’s time to move on from that. I wish Joe the best of luck in his future.”
