The leading actor revealed the news while talking to reporters on Wednesday, during which he said the long-awaited sequel is “definitely happening,” Fox News reports.

Cruise has dropped hints about a potential sequel to the high-flying action film before, but hadn’t made this positive of a declaration of it actually happening until now.

Cruise first played the role of the reckless fighter pilot who went by “Maverick” in his 20s, now he’ll reprise the role more than 30 years later at age 54.

It’s going to be near impossible to live up to the 1986 action/drama, but surely fans of the original will be excited to see them try to take their breath away once again.
