Nike Decides Whether To Continue To Endorse Tiger Woods
Nike stuck with Tiger Woods through his sex scandal back in 2009, so it might as well keep endorsing him after his troubling arrest Monday morning.
Woods was arrested in Jupiter, Fla., on suspicion of driving under the influence after police found him asleep at the wheel with his car running early Monday morning. Woods submitted to two breath tests for alcohol and both showed a .000 blood alcohol content. The golfer was, however, under the influence of several prescription drugs.
The 14-time major champion has been the face of Nike golf for more than 20 years. In 2009, when Woods’ sex scandal shattered his reputation and ruined most of his endorsement deals, Nike stuck with him. On Tuesday, following the news of Woods’ arrest, a Nike spokesman told USA Today that again there would be “no change in its relationship with Woods.”
The 41-year-old golfer signed a new endorsement deal with the footwear and apparel brand in 2013. Although Nike no longer makes golf equipment, Woods continues to wear their shoes and apparel.
Even the most optimistic Tiger fans would admit that the once electrifying golfer is nearing the end of his career. His past few years of competition have seen sporadic play and very few wins for the golfer who still holds the No. 2 spot for career wins with 79 total victories.
