Floyd “Money” Mayweather has earned millions during his boxing career and likes to maintain an image of outrageous wealth, but apparently he can’t hold onto his cash long enough to pay his taxes and currently owes the IRS $22.2 million.
The undefeated boxer filed a petition to the IRS on July 5 asking for a reprieve from unpaid taxes from 2015 until after his fight with McGregor. This isn’t a new problem for Mayweather, though — the boisterous boxer hasn’t paid his taxes on time for more than a decade, Deadspin reports.
The IRS has filed over two dozen pages of tax liens in Mayweather’s name in Clark County, Nevada since 2004, according to public records obtained by Deadspin. The documents cite millions of dollars that Mayweather owed the government at various points all-the-while the boxer and his promotional company “The Money Team” have continued to do nothing but spend all of his earnings.

The tax liens do not suggest that Mayweather is broke but simply cash-poor, which is a bad look for a man who calls himself Floyd “Money” Mayweather. The Irish UFC fighter has been taunting the 40-year-old boxer all week long. Some people have begun to assume that the only reason Mayweather agreed to fight McGregor is to make some money to pay off his taxes. The Irish fighter had a pretty blunt response when asked about that theory.
“He shoulda paid his taxes and stayed retired and kept my name out of his mouth!” McGregor said. “He’s fucked now.”
