Saturday night came and went, and Floyd Mayweather’s fight with Conor McGregor lived up to expectations.
It’s a rare instance when the sports world comes to a halt in order to watch one event. It’s pretty much reserved for the Super Bowl, the Final Four and the college football championship. It’s an exclusive club to crack, but there’s no doubt McGregor and Mayweather made it.
I watched the fight with a few friends at a D.C. residence, and it was a perfect example of why people love big moments in sports. Most of us were cheering for the scrappy Irishman to win, but were any of us disappointed when he didn’t? Not really. We were just happy to be soaking up the experience. The alcohol was flowing, the atmosphere was electric and the fight was incredibly entertaining.
I had my doubts about whether or not this fight would live up to the hype. After all, it was one of the greatest boxers to ever live against a guy coming out of the UFC. Some experts expected it to be over in the first two rounds. I honestly believe we were all a bit surprised by McGregor’s ability in the boxing ring. He might not have won the fight, but he proved he belonged. That’s a victory any day of the week for McGregor, the UFC and Dana White.
Last night is what makes America great. People from all different backgrounds coming together to crush a few drinks, enjoy a great fight and spend some time together. Now we will all have to turn our attention to football. What a time to be alive.
PS: Mayweather might have beaten McGregor, but I’m honestly not convinced he could survive my right hook.
I don’t know who will win tonight, but I know I could absolutely knock out Mayweather with any of these hits. #McGregorVsMayweather pic.twitter.com/q1J3SezK3B
