“True Detective” is officially returning for a long-awaited third season on HBO.

Mahershala Ali will star in the upcoming season of the limited series coming off of his Academy Award-winning performance in “Moonlight.” Nic Pizzolatto and Jeremy Saulnier will direct, Variety reports.

“Nic has written truly remarkable scripts,” HBO’s president of programming, Casey Bloys, said. “With his ambitious vision and Mahershala Ali and Jeremy Saulnier aboard, we are excited to embark on the next installment of ‘True Detective.'”

The third season of the crime mystery is set in the Ozark mountains where an unsolved crime that has turned into more of a mystery will play out in three separate time periods, according to Variety. Ali will play the leading role of Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.

Season one of “True Detective” was a huge success, receiving four Golden Globe nominations and winning a number of Primtime Emmy Awards. The second season didn’t see the same results. Hopefully HBO will get the hit show back on track this season.
