Matthew Stafford and company balled out Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
There were plenty of critics after the Detroit Lions gunslinger signed a $135 million extension, which made him the highest paid player in the history of the NFL.
I was OK with the amount of money Stafford was being paid, but my expectations certainly took a substantial bump upwards.
After the first game of the season, Stafford looks like he’s worth every dollar.
His first pass of the season was an interception returned for a touchdown. I had to laugh as I watched the Cardinals run it back, but Stafford was lights out after his initial mistake. He looked like a surgeon on field. He sliced apart the Cardinals secondary, arguably the best in the NFL, like it was absolutely nothing.
He finished the game with four touchdowns and nearly 300 passing yards.
WATCH:
I had somebody text me early in the game mocking Stafford’s interception. The person is well versed in football, and really wanted me to know he thought the Texas-born quarterback was “horrendous.”
I didn’t respond. I let Stafford’s arm do the talking for me. He’s a gunslinger through and through. His critics have been pretty much silent Monday morning. I wonder where they all went.
Either way, it looks like we’ve got the fire cooking in the Motor City.
