Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has impeded the progress of contract negotiations aimed at an extension for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, according to sources familiar with those talks.
“If not for Jerry,” one person familiar with the contract negotiations said this weekend, “this deal would be done.”
While some owners believe a deal will be agreed upon, others aren’t quite as sure thanks to Jones, who has interjected himself into the process of the NFL’s six-man compensation committee, becoming the unofficial seventh member.
The increasingly edgy relationship between Jones and Goodell has sharpened to the point where Goodell’s long-term future could be in question, according to league sources.
That should put an end to the debate about whether or not Jones is the most powerful owner in the league. There have been rumblings for a long time about Goodell, but no amount of owners have ever been able to come together and bounce the commissioner from his role.
Well, it looks like Jones just might be able to get that done all by himself. It’s pretty much an open secret that no major moves can happen in the NFL without Jones’s approval, and this report from ESPN is only further proof of this widely held belief.
While it’s not clear what Jones’s problems are with Goodell, it’s a safe bet to assume that the suspension of Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott over claims of domestic violence is a good place to start.
This is going to be fascinating to watch. If Jones is able to successfully remove Goodell from power, it’d signify that the man is unstoppable and the NFL is his league. It looks like the war between these two has just begun.
