Tom Petty Dead At 66, Long Time Friend And Manager Confirms

Legendary rocker Tom Petty has died, reports the Hollywood Reporter. He was 66.

“On behalf of the Tom Petty family, we are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty,” Tony Dimitriades, longtime manager of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, said in a statement on behalf of the singer’s family. (RELATED: Tom Petty Reportedly Clinging To Life–Conflicting Reports)

“He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived,” he added. “He died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.”

Earlier in the day, conflicting reports had outlets first reporting that the singer had died, only to retract the stories later after the Los Angeles Police Department said they couldn’t confirm the signer’s status and that “initial information was inadvertently provided to some media sources.”

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers just finished their 40th Anniversary tour which ended at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles last week after a three-night run of sold out shows.

In 2002, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with the Heartbreakers, earning more than a dozen Grammy Awards and 18 nominations during his career.

Petty is survived by his wife, Dana York, their two daughters, and one step son.
