Nobody knew it would be his last song ever, but Tom Petty finished his career at the end of his 40th anniversary tour with “American Girl” before a packed crowd at the famed Hollywood bowl.

“I want to thank all of you for coming out tonight. We love you dearly. I want to thank you for forty years, a really great time” Petty said before letting it rip one last time.

The patriotic hit displayed the legacy of the American rock ‘n’ roll artist, who dedicated his life to making music for his millions of fans around the country.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers wrapped up the end of their 40th anniversary tour with a three-night run at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The legendary rocker passed away just seven days later after going into cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu.

Petty will forever be remembered as a true American rock ‘n’ roll icon, and his final performance proves it.
