There is a possible scenario where none of the top four teams in the college football playoff rankings make the top four in the college football playoff.

The top four are currently Clemson, Auburn, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. They’re all in if they win out. There’s no question or debate about any of that.

However, running through some scenarios on FiveThirtyEight’s simulator, I found that there is a very likely outcome where none of those teams make the playoffs.

What would happen if all four lose this weekend and USC beats Stanford in the PAC-12 championship? Well, it gets very interesting.

According to the simulator, the playoff odds would look like this:

  • Georgia: 99%
  • Miami: 96%
  • Ohio State: 65%
  • Alabama: 46%
  • USC: 34%
  • Clemson: 31%
  • Auburn: 11%
  • TCU: 10%
  • Oklahoma: 4%
  • Wisconsin: 3%

Can you imagine the chaos if that scenario happens? And here’s the craziest part, every single one of the top four teams could very easily lose this weekend. In fact, I’d be shocked if at least one doesn’t take a loss on Saturday.

Brace for impact, because I have a feeling things might get a bit crazy in the next few days.
