Jimmy Fallon lit into Matt Lauer in his opening monologue on “The Tonight Show” Wednesday night, joking about the “Today” host’s epic downfall.

“The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree was lit tonight,” Fallon began. “Also getting lit tonight: the HR rep over at the ‘Today’ show.”

NBC announced Lauer’s termination from the network on Wednesday morning due to allegations of sexual misconduct against the media personality. Throughout the course of the day, more allegations came out and resurfaced video clips of some questionable behavior by Lauer only added to the media frenzy.

“NBC has fired Matt Lauer from the ‘Today’ show after he was accused of inappropriate sexual behavior,” Fallon continued. “So if you’re wondering where in the world is Matt Lauer, he’s probably at a bar with Charlie Rose.”

Lauer led an annual, five-day segment called “Where in the World is Matt Lauer?” from 1998 to 2009. Charlie Rose was recently fired by CBS, PBS and Bloomberg for sexual harassment after decades of appearing on television.

Lauer’s “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie announced his firing by reading a statement from NBC chairman Andrew Lack on the air Wednesday morning. It’s only right that Fallon made light of the situation later that night on the network.
