A man escaping the wildfires in Ventura County, California, was filmed in the middle of a heroic act Wednesday.

The unidentified hero pulled over on Highway 1 when he saw a rabbit struggling to find shelter from the raging fire. So he got out of his car to try and help the terrified animal.

While vehicles raced by the man and an onlooker filmed, he pulled the rabbit out of the burning brush and delivered it to safety.

While the man declined to do an interview after saving the rabbit, his heroic act certainly won’t go unnoticed.

Fires in California grow stronger each day and are hitting the exclusive neighborhoods around Los Angeles the hardest. Brush burning indexes above 165 are considered extreme and require a watchful eye. Thursday morning, the index clocked in at 296, almost double the “extreme” level and the highest ever reported.

More than 100,000 acres have already burned, and firefighters expect winds to pick up today, which will only make fires more widespread into the weekend.
