Add Dwayne Johnson to the list of celebrities eyeing the 2020 presidential ticket.
Johnson – who’s flirted with the idea of a presidential run in the past – fanned the rumor flames last week when asked by Ellen DeGeneres.
“I don’t know if this is true but people talk about you running for President…Will you run?” Ellen asked.
“I would, I’m seriously considering it,” he said, as the crowd erupted into cheers.
So when USA Today further probed Johnson about a potential run, he clarified. Noting there would still be a lot to be worked out, he said, “That would probably be the case, yes…[but] this actually never came from me. It started [with] a piece in The Washington Post, and there was this kind of groundswell.”
The Washington Post piece Johnson is referencing ginned up a sort of momentary cultural hysteria, since it conjectured that “he could actually win.”
Johnson did note to USA Today that “the consideration comes at the desire from a large amount of people who would like to see this happen. But I mean, honestly, there are so many different variables that have to come into play when you think about this. Politics is not my business. So the consideration is there. And we’ll just have to see. I’ll continue to watch and learn as much as I can.”
The Rock isn’t disclosing which party he’d run for, but his guest appearance at the 2000 Republican National Convention might serve as a teaser.
For right now, The Rock’s motto is “to serve the people, and create a better environment for them,” which doesn’t have the same ring as MAGA. But in this day and age, anything can happen.
