Former South Carolina Gamecocks superstar running back Marcus Lattimore is returning to the game that made him famous, and is joining the staff of his alma mater.

ESPN reported the following:

Former South Carolina star running back Marcus Lattimore, whose NFL career was derailed by two devastating knee injuries in college, has returned to his alma mater to be a part of Will Muschamp’s staff.

Lattimore, who had previously been the head coach at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, will serve as the Gamecocks’ director of player development for life skills, Muschamp said. He will educate South Carolina’s players during their offseason Beyond Football program, which focuses on career development, addiction, financial responsibility and dating/relationships.

For those of you who might not remember, Lattimore suffered one of the worst knee injuries I’ve ever seen. It derailed his playing career, and he retired from the sport before taking a single snap during an NFL game.

Lattimore was incredible to watch at South Carolina. It was like watching a video game player out there. So electric and fun. That all came crashing down the moment he blew out his knee. It was disgusting to watch.

I’ve often used Lattimore as an example as to why there shouldn’t be an age restriction on entering the NFL draft. He probably could have played in the NFL after his freshman year. Instead, he had to return to South Carolina, and it resulted in his potential to make tons of money being destroyed.

At least he’s still staying involved with the sport. Should be fun to watch him grow with the Gamecocks.
