I like this hire a lot for Arizona. Sumlin was incredibly under-appreciated during his time at Texas A&M.
He had some very early and great success with Johnny Manziel and then expectations just got over the top after the electric quarterback left. Fans and boosters started to think that Sumlin should be winning at an Alabama-like level every year. That’s just a ridiculous thing to expect out of any coach.
Texas A&M competed at a high level in the SEC and was winning more games than not. Nobody was willing to see anything through a reasonable lens, and it didn’t even seem like Sumlin wanted to be around by the time the Aggies cut him loose.
Don’t think for a second that Sumlin isn’t a solid coach. This is a huge hire for Arizona, and I think he’s going to have some great success in the PAC-12.
