Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield really doesn’t want scouts to view him as the next Johnny Manziel, and he’s trying to tamper down that kind of talk.

Mayfield told the media the following, according to The Denver Post’s Nicki Jhabvala:

Everybody wants to portray the bad boy, the Johnny Manziel stuff, but I love the game of football. There’s no doubt about that. I’m an emotional player. I do anything it takes to win. I love being around my teammates, and I love leading and having responsibility.

It’s easy to understand the comparison between the two because it’s been staring us in the face for the last couple of years. They have similar physical builds and abilities on the field, but it’s the off the field incidents that have drawn the most comparisons.

Manziel has been arrested twice, and Mayfield infamously ran from police officers before being tackled prior to this past season.

Now, has Mayfield had all the substance abuse problems that have been well-documented with Manziel? No, he has not had any of those problems. However, that doesn’t exactly make people forget about his arrest.

The easiest way for people to forget about the Manziel comparisons is to go out there on Sundays, win and stay out of trouble. The rest will take care of itself.
