Johnny Manziel revealed in an interview with ABC News that he suffers from mental illness and is taking medication to help.
“I am taking medication for bipolar, and I am working to try to make sure I don’t fall back into any type of depression, because I know where that leads me, and I know how slippery a slope that is for me,” the Texas A&M Heisman winner explained during the highly-anticipated interview. “At the end of the day, I can’t help that my wires are a little bit differently crossed than yours. I can’t help my mental makeup or the way that I was created.”
The whole interview with ABC news is incredible. It’s crazy to think about how far the Johnny Football saga has gone. He is arguably the greatest college football player in the history of the game, won the Heisman, was a first round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns and we all know what happened next.
It looks like he’s finally in a position to move forward while being a happy person. There was a chance when I thought the Manziel story would have a very tragic end. There just didn’t appear to be a light at the end of the tunnel. He really does look like he’s turned it around. Good for him for having the courage to openly discuss mental illness, which is something often ignored in the sports world.
Hopefully we’re looking at Johnny Manziel beginning a new era of football.
