The Minnesota Vikings are not expected to keep or franchise tag quarterback Case Keenum.

NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport tweeted Monday, “The #Vikings are not expected to franchise tag QB Case Keenum and he’s slated to hit free agency, per sources with knowledge of the team’s thinking. Barring a change of heart, Minnesota joins the fray for a starting QB… and will make these next few weeks fascinating.”

I really don’t like this move by the Vikings. Keenum got Minnesota to the NFC championship game, and played one hell of an outstanding season when he was called upon.

This is very mind-boggling to me. The obvious conclusion here is that the Vikings are confident in Teddy Bridgewater, but that is very much the roll of the dice. There’s no guarantee Bridgewater is ever the player he was before his knee injury or that he can win like Keenum did this past season.

Getting rid of Keenum with no guaranteed star in the wings is the definition of getting risky. The executives in Minnesota better pray this works out. Decisions like this one are what cost people their jobs when they go sideways. Keenum also shouldn’t shed any tears. There is absolutely a team out there that will be more than willing to make him a rich man.
