Alabama football coach Nick Saban reportedly recently interviewed former Tennessee coach Butch Jones for a position on his staff.

AL.com reported the following:

Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban has been in contact with former Tennessee coach Butch Jones regarding an offensive analyst position, sources told AL.com. Jones has visited Tuscaloosa and met with Saban in person, per sources.

Jones is being paid approximately an $8.2 million buyout by Tennessee, paid in monthly installments until Feb. 2021, according to reports. That number is mitigated by any future salary he earns.

I might not like Alabama football, but even I can recognize that Saban is a football genius. That’s why this move is so mind-boggling to me. Have we all forgotten what an absolutely disaster Jones was at Tennessee?

The guy couldn’t coach at all. He could absolutely not get the Volunteers to do anything. It was embarrassing. I remember watching way too many Tennessee games this past season just to see if the team would implode at any given moment. Jones and company rarely disappointed. It was always a complete disaster. Just a disgraceful excuse for college football.

That’s why it makes no sense to me that anybody would want Jones on his staff, especially a winner like Saban. The Alabama head coach has introduced an unprecedented era of success in modern football. The Crimson Tide have brutalized teams under his tutelage.

Doesn’t make sense to me at all why he’d want Jones. I most certainly wouldn’t, but I also don’t have five national championships. Maybe Saban knows what he’s doing.
