Meghan Markle voiced her support for the #MeToo and Time’s Up campaigns, saying that “women don’t need a voice” but need to “feel empowered to use it.”

“You’ll often hear people saying ‘but you’re helping women find their voices.’ I fundamentally disagree with that,” the 36-year-old actress and soon-to-be member of the British royal family shared during her first joint royal event Wednesday with Prince Harry, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton at a charity event for the Royal Foundation. (SLIDESHOW: 18 Times Meghan Markle Already Looked Like A Royal)

“Because women don’t need to find a voice. They have a voice,” she added. “They need to feel empowered to use it, and people need to be encouraged to listen.”

“And I think right now in the climate that we’re seeing so many campaigns, #MeToo and Time’s Up, there is no better time than to really continue to shine a light on women feeling empowered and people really helping to support them, men included in that,” she continued. “It makes such a tremendous difference.”

Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement in November. The royal wedding will take place May 19.
