Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk,” the story of hundreds of thousands of British soldiers stranded on the beach in World War II, received praise from critics and success at the box office. Now, it is up for eight Academy Awards, including best picture and best director.

Since its release, “12 Strong” has told the story of the first group of soldiers embedded in Afghanistan in the immediate aftermath of 9/11.

War movies have a way of captivating audiences, and telling important, hard-hitting stories. The genre has been around since the start of cinema, and be it true stories or fictionalized accounts of real battles, audiences, critics and the Academy have a history of honoring the stories of veterans and their struggles to protect this country.

With the success of “Dunkirk” and “12 Strong,” now is as good a time as any to take a look at nine of the best war movies ever made. Here is our list.
