Snapchat has been forced to apologize after it ran an ad Monday asking some of its users if they would rather slap Rihanna or punch Chris Brown.

Chris Brown was convicted in 2009 for beating his then-girlfriend Rihanna so badly that she was hospitalized for visible facial injuries. He later apologized for the incident and said he felt like “a f*cking monster” for beating Rihanna.

Needless to say, people weren’t too thrilled about the cheeky Snapchat ad, even if it was released 10 years after the fact. Even Chelsea Clinton got into the conversation.

A Snapchat spokesperson told Indy 100, “The ad was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry that this happened.”

Snapchat’s CEO Evan Spiegel has had his fair share of controversy. In 2014 Spiegel apologized for an slew of leaked emails about his sexual relationships with girls during his days back at Stanford University. So this ad, while probably not officially okayed by Siegel himself, kind of comes with the Snapchat territory.
