A new documentary series on Oxygen will detail Aaron Hernandez’s final days, the former NFL tight end’s attorney says.
The two part series is called “Aaron Hernandez Uncovered” and will detail the strange ‘double life’ Hernandez led, as well as attempt to uncover what exactly led to his sudden death in prison.
Hernandez was serving life in prison without the possibility of parole after he was found guilty of murdering Odin Lloyd in 2013. He began his sentence in a maximum security prison just outside of Foxborough, MA in 2015.
In 2017, Hernandez was acquitted of a double homicide while serving life in prison. But five days later he was found hanging from a bedsheet in his prison cell. It was later determined that he had one of the worst cases of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) ever recorded.
But now Hernandez’s lead defense attorney Jose Baez wants to tell his side of the story.
“After his death, I can tell you it really disturbed me how many people were throwing out stories and saying certain things that were not only factually inaccurate, but just outright abusive,” he told Fox News. “I thought and I felt, and I still do to this day, that the real story has to get out there…No one has ever captured the true Aaron Hernandez. It’s been bothersome to me and that’s why I decided to take part of it.”
Baez also mentions that Hernandez’s “final days were happy days.” But that doesn’t necessarily mean he had all of his faculties about him.
“When you have that type of a brain disease, it doesn’t control logic,” he explained. “That’s what people have a hard time understanding. If the brain is destroyed, and it was, then that’s what makes us go. Our thoughts, our decisions… our whole existence flows from that.”
The docu-series will also address other rumors that plagued Hernandez’s career, like his possible bisexuality and how that could have motivated his sudden suicide.
The series will premiere on March 17 on Oxygen at 7:00 PM ET.
