Academy Award-winning actor Heath Ledger would have turned 39 on Wednesday if it weren’t for his tragic and untimely death. The Australian actor died in January of 2008, then posthumously won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for “The Dark Knight.”

Ledger was a fantastic actor, and his performances in cinema were real and entertaining. His absence since his death has certainly been felt.

The performer exploded onto the scene in the early 2000’s and commanded the scene in films like “The Patriot,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” “A Knight’s Tale,” “The Brother’s Grimm,” “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Dark Knight.” He was nominated for two Oscars for the latter two.

Ledger is one of only two actors to win an Oscar posthumously, the other being Peter Finch for “Network.” Ledger was significantly younger than Finch when he died. There’s no telling how many more great films Ledger would have made if he were still alive today.

Here are some of Ledger’s coolest, looks, moments and films, in honor of what would be his 39th birthday.
