Softball season is right around the corner, and that means it’s time for Jim Rome’s awesome rant about “softball guy.”

I really do enjoy softball season. There’s nothing better on a summer day after work than getting a few beers and watching your team steamroll some people. It’s what beer league softball is all about.

However, there are always those people who take it way too far. That’s what Rome focuses on in his famous rant. It’s all about the angry young guy who actually is dumb enough to believe he’s a legit player. Listen, if you’re a legit player, then you would be playing actual baseball. Let’s not get it twisted, and nobody says it better than Rome.

I’m sure some of you probably think Rome’s little rant is a bit of an exaggeration. I can promise you that it’s not. I’ve witnessed “angry young guy” with my own eyes.

True story, I once watched a guy show up late to a game, complain about not having the right glove, needing to “warm up” his bat to save the team, moan about the rest of the team and then proceed to blow the game. You can’t make this stuff up. This guy was never accused of being overly intelligent, and it was absurd even for the standards set by an idiot. He’s all of Kenny Powers, minus all the humor and talent. As we often say in the sports world, it’s just a sh**show waiting to happen.

People like this should be banned for life. Listen, you’re an absolute loser if you treat softball like it’s game seven of the 1980 Miracle on Ice. You’re a complete clown and loser, who also probably doesn’t pick up women.

Here’s how you do softball correct. Get your swings in, get your beers in and find a bar afterwards. It’s not a hard formula. If you’re yelling at teammates, talking about needing to “save” the team, complaining about who is playing what position, complaining about your glove, then you’re doing it wrong.

Of course, “young angry guy” generally lacks the basic intelligence to understand the difference. As Rome points out, he thinks he could be Derek Jeter. It’s sad to witness this, but I’ve seen it far too many times. Let’s all try to be a little better, enjoy a few more beers and maybe not tell the “angry young guy” out there where or when our games our. That’s sounds nice. Let’s do that.
