Morgan Freeman’s granddaughter was brutally killed in August 2017 but details of the case have remained hushed until very recently.

Freeman’s granddaughter, E’Dena Hines, 33, was stabbed to death in Washington Heights, Manhattan on August 16 by a man presumed to be her boyfriend. The NY Daily News reports that Hines was stabbed around 25 times by Lamar Davenport while he was under a “PCP-induced psychosis.”

A witness to the incident detailed the gruesome event in court this week. 22 year old nursing student Cristina Aviles said she came upon Hines and Davenport fighting outside around 2:30 AM on that August day.

“They were arguing. She was on the [ground], and he was on top of her, restraining her, stopping her from getting loose from his grip,” Aviles said. “I proceeded to call the cops. He was yelling things about releasing the devil out of her. And then he pulled out a knife. There was multiple stabs — the back, and then on the front of her chest and her neck. She was on her stomach, and then she somehow flipped over, and he stabbed her on the chest. She was trying to get away from him by pushing him and kicking him. And then he stopped after she was still.”

Aviles said she called the police and wanted to help but was scared Davenport would turn and attack her, too.

She says the last thing she heard Hines say was, “Why are you doing this?”

This is an incredibly chilling account. Court proceedings have just begun but attorneys are trying to punish Davenport to the fullest extent of the law.

“Whatever the effects of PCP were on his motivations to attack (Hines), his attack was purposeful, with the conscious objective to cause her death,” Prosecutor Christopher Prevost said during an opening statement.

Davenport was charged with second-degree murder and, if convicted, faces up to 25 years in prison.
