NFL Releases Wet-Blanket Statement After Supreme Court Gambling Decision
People all over America are celebrating after the Supreme Court struck down a federal gambling ban on sports, but the NFL doesn’t seem pumped.
The NFL’s long-standing and unwavering commitment to protecting the integrity of our game remains absolute. Congress has long-recognized the potential harms posed by sports betting to the integrity of sporting contests and the public confidence in these events.
Given that history, we intend to call on Congress again, this time to enact a core regulatory framework for legalized sports betting. We also will work closely with our clubs to ensure that any state efforts that move forward in the meantime protect our fans and the integrity of the game.
Why am I not surprised that the NFL is, once again, not with the times? The rest of the world is celebrating and the NFL is talking about the “integrity of our game” and the need to “call on Congress.”
Give me a break. The NFL could just get down with the party and Roger Goodell could seem cool for once in his life. That’d be cool, wouldn’t it? Of course, that’s apparently way too easy if you’re the NFL. Instead, the league is choosing to only reinforce all the stuff they’ve done that has already upset fans.
Too bad. I really thought the NFL wouldn’t act like a completely clueless organization here and would recognize what their fans want. I guess that was just asking too much.
