Nick Saban Makes Some Absurd Comments About UCF’s Undefeated Season
Alabama football coach Nick Saban recently opined about UCF claiming to be national champions, and he doesn’t sound like a fan.
Nick Saban told USA Today:
If you honor and respect the system that we have, (despite) some of the imperfections that you understand that the system has, then you wouldn’t do something out of respect for the system that we have. I guess anybody has the prerogative to claim anything. But self-proclaimed is not the same as actually earning it. And there’s probably a significant number of people who don’t respect people who make self-proclaimed sort of accolades for themselves.
You have got to be kidding me with these statements from Saban. He’s an incredible coach, but the lack of self-awareness for Alabama here is laughable. The Crimson Tide claims to have won a total of 16 national championships, and seven of them are disputed on some level. That’s right. Alabama has claimed multiple national titles that the NCAA doesn’t recognize, which is exactly what Saban seems upset at UCF for doing. (SLIDESHOW: These Sexy Women Love Football)
This quote alone is absolutely stunning:
And there’s probably a significant number of people who don’t respect people who make self-proclaimed sort of accolades for themselves.
Dude! Your own school has done this on multiple occasions. UCF went 13–0, beat the SEC West champion and was the only undefeated college football team. How is Alabama able to say with a straight face that UCF can’t claim to be champions when the Tide have done it multiple times?
I can recognize that Saban has an incredible program down in Alabama, but these comments are indefensible — unless we’re suspending reality and logic.
