Rapper XXXTentacion Breaks Taylor Swift Single-Day Streaming Record Following Terrible Death
XXXTentacion broke Taylor Swift’s single-day streaming record a day after he was shot and killed while leaving a motorcycle dealership in southern Florida.
According to Spotifycharts.com, the 20-year-old singer — born Dwayne Onfroy — set a new record on Spotify Tuesday for his song “Sad!” It had 10.4 million streams globally, surpassing Swift’s 2017 hit “Look What You Made Me Do,” which had 10.1 million streams.
The record comes on the heels of Spotify’s decision to ban the rapper’s music in May as part of the streaming site’s new policy against hate content and hateful conduct. The move was in response to Onfroy awaiting trial for allegedly assaulting his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Geneva Ayala.
The company soon reversed that decision following a backlash from other rappers and R&B artist who said the new policy seemed to unfairly target only their industry.
“While we believe our intentions were good, the language was too vague, we created confusion and concern, and didn’t spend enough time getting input from our own team and key partners before sharing new guidelines,” a statement from Spotify reads in the Miami New Times.
On Thursday, a 22-year-old Florida man was arrested and charged with first-degree murder without premeditation in the rapper’s death. He is being held without bond.
