What Nick Saban Did With His First Bonus Check Reveals The Type Of Man He Truly Is

David Hookstead | Reporter

Nick Saban is viewed as one of the toughest men in all of football, but his wife Terry recently revealed a much softer side.

Terry discussed her superstar husband on the “Origins” podcast with Andrew Miller. Most people only know the side of Saban that has won six national championships, but what he did with his first bonus check speaks volumes about who he is as a man.

According to Saturday Down South, Terry revealed Saban earned a bonus of around $8,000 when coaching in the early 1990s for the Cleveland Browns. She wanted to buy a piano or go on a nice vacation.

The legendary Alabama coach had a different plan. He decided to pay off her father’s mortgage.

I love hearing stories like this about coaches. It’s not that I’m surprised Saban helped his father-in-law. That doesn’t shock me at all. I’m sure he’s a great guy, but it’s the fact it was the first thing he wanted to do. How many stories have we read about guys getting their hands on some real money for the first time, and going crazy? (RELATED: ALABAMA QB DOESN’T SEEM HAPPY WITH NICK SABAN. SHOULD FANS BE WORRIED?)

That’s not what Saban did at all. He helped Terry’s father, who was a coal miner. I know that I’ve been critical of SEC, Alabama and at times I’ve been critical of Saban. That’s always been focused on what goes on between the goal lines.

As for him off the field, he sounds like a hell of a great dude. Major props to Saban and shout out to his wife for sharing this awesome story.
