CMT Omits Male Artists For Artists Of The Year Show
CMT has omitted country male artists for its annual Artists of the Year show.
“In this monumental year for women, dedicating one of the biggest nights in the genre to applaud female country artists not only solidifies our commitment, but we hope will spark a much-needed change in the industry,” CMT senior VP Leslie Fram explained Tuesday in a statement to Variety.
The honorees for the 2018 Artist of the Year include Carrie Underwood, Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballernini and Miranda Lambert, plus Kimberly Schlapman from Little Big Town and Karen Fairchild from Lady Antebellum.
Morris celebrated the news on Instagram post, captioning her post, “LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE GIRLS! Thank you @CMT for helping narrow the gap in this industry. Proud to be honored among these amazing ladies + friends.”

Both Underwood and Ballerini are returnees to the show, last appearing in 2016. Lambert was last on in 2014. Schlapman and the rest of her band were last on the program in 2015. Fairchild is returning after being absent since 2011.
The network faced a backlash for having an all-male list of honorees last year for the annual program.
The Artists of the Year show is scheduled to air Oct. 17 on CMT.
