Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model Robyn Lawley called for a boycott of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show because it fails to include diverse “body shapes and sizes” on its runways.
The 29-year-old model, who is considered plus-size according to the fashion industry, told the Sydney Morning Herald Wednesday that it makes her feel “like s**t every year looking at that show,” and that she “shouldn’t have to feel that way” when asked about her boycott. “Where’s the inclusivity? Where’s the diversity? The perfection is intense,” she added. “I want actual cellulite on a catwalk. I want girls to be relatable. Women want to see diversity. I want to see women like me. Women are beautiful at different sizes, short or tall. We’re the ones who are buying the products, so put your money where your mouth is.”
The swimsuit model launched an online petition Wednesday and encouraged others to not watch the underwear show with a post on Instagram.
“Victoria’s Secret has dominated the space for almost 30 years by telling women there is only one kind of body beautiful,” Lawley wrote on Instagram. “Until Victoria’s Secret commits to representing ALL women on stage, I am calling for a complete boycott of this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.”
“It’s time Victoria’s Secret recognized the buying power and influence of women of ALL ages, shapes, sizes, and ethnicities,” she added. “The female gaze is powerful, and together, we can celebrate the beauty of our diversity. It’s about time Victoria’s Secret celebrated the customers that fuel its bottom line.”
More than 50 models have already been cast to walk in this year’s lingerie show being held in New York City which will air on November 8 and be seen in more than 150 countries.
