A new report suggests Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy may not have the job security most other franchise coaches enjoy.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, McCarthy, who has been the Packers head coach since 2006, may be on shaky ground.

“Mike McCarthy is certainly now on the hot seat for Green Bay,” Rapoport said, via NFL.com. “He needs to close strong, it feels like, to keep his job in Green Bay. Obviously, one of the longest tenured coaches in the NFL and that is all in doubt.”

Rapoport added, “And there’s a couple reasons why. One of them does involve the disconnect with Aaron Rodgers — the tension there regarding the direction of the offense. Rodgers has been pretty vocal about his frustration with play-calling and the lack of creativity was there on Thursday night. That, of course, is something [Packers] CEO Mark Murphy will have to make a big decision on at the end of the year.”

That “disconnect” Rapoport mentioned isn’t exactly Green Bay’s best kept secret. Tension between McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers has been palpable for several seasons now, but it could be coming to a head.

Earlier in October, Rodgers gave a fiery postgame press conference, during which he passive-aggressively blamed somebody for lacking “flow” in his play-calling and found fault in the overall “plan.” We can only assume these are direct shots at McCarthy.

And given that Green Bay (4-5-1) has lost three of their last four games, it’s probably safe to assume McCarthy isn’t the most confident coach in the league.
