Texas Governor Greg Abbott sounds like he’s onboard to renew the football rivalry between Texas and Texas A&M.

Abbott said the following during his State of the State speech Tuesday:

I am inspired by the camaraderie and the collaboration that has already infused this session. It seems unprecedented, and I’ve got to tell you, I’m feeling it myself. I’m feeling moved. And I want to set the example. For example, I’m willing to step up and put aside past differences and work with [state Rep.] Lyle Larson to reinstate the rivalry game between the Aggies and the Longhorns.

Look, I’m glad people are all about firing up some good rivalries, but forcing the Aggies and Longhorns to play every year is not a super smart idea.

You only get so many non-conference games, and I’m not sure either school wants to burn one every year playing the exact same Power Five team. (RELATED: Proposed Bill Would Require These Two College Football Powerhouses To Play Each Other)

This was a great rivalry, but it just doesn’t work now that they’re in different conferences.

Now, here’s an option that might work, but it’s not the sexiest idea in reality. Instead of playing every year, the two schools could play once a decade or once every five years.

Is it as great of rivalry then? No, but it’s better than nothing, and it’d allow the schools to play every once in awhile.

Trust me, it’s a pipe dream to think the Aggies and Longhorns will begin playing every year again. It’s just not going to happen.

However, maybe something can be figured out where they play every few years. That could be possible, but a yearly game is never going to happen.
