ABC entertainment president Canning Dungey made the announcement during the network’s upfront presentation in New York on Tuesday. The 12-time Grammy nominee became the first on-screen talent to join the reality competition show since ABC announced they would be bringing it back on air.

“I am honored and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the American Idol tradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories,” Perry said. “I’m always listening to new music, and love discovering diamonds in the rough–from mentoring young artists on my label, or highlighting new artists on my tours, I want to bring it back to the music.”

Perry has turned down offers to do other singing competition shows in the past, according to Variety, but it seems she is excited to be a central part of the “American Idol” revival.
