Country superstar Eric Church recently performed a new song about the Las Vegas massacre.

The song is titled “Why Not Me,” and it’s dedicated to Sonny Melton. Melton died shielding his wife from gunfire after Stephen Paddock opened up fire with a rifle from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel.

“The reason I’m here tonight is because of Heather Melton, and her husband Sonny who died, and every person that was there. And I’ll tell you, I saw that crowd. I saw them with their hands in the hair, with boots in the air, and that moment in time was frozen, and there is no amount of bullets that can take that away,” Church, who had performed a couple days earlier in Las Vegas, told the crowd before he began singing.

He also added that he had no intentions of performing at the Grand Ole Opry, but changed his mind after seeing an interview with Melton’s wife on CNN.

I’m sure this won’t be the last song that comes out of country music to address the carnage that happened Sunday night. It was a horrific event, but people always find a way of coming together.

Church’s new song is a small step, but there’s no doubt it’ll help lots of people in the healing process.
