I wrapped up the sixth and final season of “Longmire” on Netflix last night, and it was everything fans could have hoped it would be.
A few days ago, I wrote about how the show’s conclusion represented an end of an era. Well, the finale was even better than I thought it would be.
I’ll do my best to avoid spoilers here, as I know lots of my readers are big fans of the show. However, I’m going to get into a few, so beware.
The finale did an outstanding job of wrapping up loose ends. The entire show was about Sheriff Walt Longmire’s journey to move past his wife’s murder. He’s an honorable lawman, but his demons have always dogged him. That journey was wrapped up nicely in the finale. Walt’s ability to find peace came through a hell of a lot of violence.
His enemies died at the barrel of a gun, and their deaths signified his ability to move beyond his role as a lawman. The most important part of closing the chapter on his wife’s death came when he and Vic finally hooked up. It was six long years in the making, and with the show now on Netflix, it was a shade more graphic than if it had aired on television.
In the end, “Longmire” was a hell of a lot more than just a modern-day Western. It was about a man’s struggle to find redemption, which sometimes required a bit of violence. It also required a bit of companionship, as we see with Walt and Vic at the end. Obviously, everybody saw this happening, but it’s still well done.
I won’t reveal what happens to all the other main characters, but I don’t think anybody will be disappointed.
“Longmire” was a lot of fun while it aired, and I’m sad to see it go. I’m not sure we’ll get a show as good as this one for a very long time. So, if you haven’t finished yet, I suggest you grab a beer and watch Walt finish a journey six years in the making.
